Happy Thanksgiving from the Rotz Family!
Happy Thanksgiving from the Rotz Family!
It all started when after we got married and built a house and BTR’s grandpa bought him tools as our wedding present. We had previously always lived in apartments so we didn’t have anything! His first project was building the deck on the back of our house. It’s probably the most used thing he’s ever built, we eat dinner out there every night during warmer months.
He started out building birdhouses and picnic tables for friends and family, but it’s evolved into so much more. He now has his own etsy shop, BTRWoodworks.
He doesn’t build big items as much anymore, instead he focuses on small items that are easy to ship. So his shop is mostly comprised of things like iPad and iPhone stands, business card holders, postcard stands, and bottle openers.
While most of the time he is working on making products for his shop, he tries to make time for fun projects, like this heart sign made out of pallets we took apart. It’s hanging in our bathroom above the tub now!
He does have some items in a few local shops, and last year he had a booth at my Junior Service Club Holly Day Luncheon. He sells the growth charts locally to friends and family, they are way to big to ship!
Since starting his shop in November of 2012, he has had almost 2000 sales! And that number doesn’t include a number of bulk orders to shops and other customers.
Most of the tools in his shop he has found on Craig’s List. But earlier this year he decided to upgrade his table saw and he got a SawStop. It is one of the best saws on the market and it has special technology so if your finger touches the saw blade, a special break releases and pulls down the saw blade. There are no other saws like it on the market. We’ve seen demonstrations at the woodworking show (with a hotdog, not a finger!) and it literally looks like a papercut (see the video I took here) It makes me feel so much better knowing he is safe when he out there working!
I don’t have any pictures of them, but BTR has also made lots of cutting boards as gifts for friends and family! He doesn’t have any for sale in his etsy shop, but if you are interested, I’m sure he would make you one. :)
I love all of BTR’s projects, but I’m pretty sure my favorite thing he’s ever done is the wood wall in Jude’s room.
His newest adventure in woodworking has been getting used bourbon barrels and deconstructing them and making bottle openers out of them. They are really neat because they don’t dent the cap!
I help BTR out by shipping a lot of his orders and answering customer questions on etsy. He only has time to work on things during the week after school and on the weekends.
Right now BTR is having a sale in his etsy shop for 15% off everything! It only lasts until Tuesday night (11/25) and he won’t be having any other sales this holiday season. Everything he makes is priced perfect for stocking stuffers for your loved ones!
That was a really long post! Thanks for reading (if you made it all the way through)!
I can’t believe it’s already Friday! I am definitely ready for the weekend!
Jude turned seven months about two weeks ago, and we totally slacked on taking his monthly photo because we were so preoccupied with his surgery. We finally got it together and snapped a few earlier this week. Here are a few of my favorites. I love the one BTR snapped of me taking Jude’s picture with the real camera.
And when did my baby get so big? I posted this photo on Instagram a few days ago, he is completely pulling up and standing up!?!?! We are going to lower his crib this weekend. #stopgrowing
I’m so excited about this new marquee sign I received as a birthday gift! I spotted it at Home Goods a few weeks ago and mentioned to BTR how awesome I thought it was. Well he told his mom and she went out and bought it for me! I can’t wait to get it hanging in my studio! My friend Sara actually DIY-ed one for her playroom and I think it’s amazing. I would love to make an R one day!
This weekend is my 10 year high school reunion! I seriously can’t believe I graduated high school ten years ago, it seems like it was yesterday. Well I realized last week that I haven’t had my hair done in a ridiculously long time and luckily my hair dresser was able to fit me in yesterday afternoon. And I treated myself to a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha to celebrate new color!
Speaking of high school reunions, what in the world are you supposed to wear? I haven’t bought a lot of clothes and let’s be honest, many of my old clothes still don’t fit post-baby. I’ve bought a few basic items for this in between time, but I really wanted something new and fun to wear on Saturday. I was reading Leah at Everyday Love’s blog this week and she wrote about wanting this sweater because she thought it was drapey and would cover her up. Well I got online and saw that they were available at our local Nordstrom and it was on sale! I pretty much love it and plan on wearing it to every holiday event over the next month. And now I wish I had bought it in another color too!
I haven’t done a lot of stationery or invitation designing in the past few months, but my mom asked me to design some notecards for her friends! It was so much fun getting back on the computer and working on fun designs and patterns and colors! I forgot how much I enjoy doing it. If you ever need any personalized stationery or gift products, I’d love to design something for you!
We have a very busy weekend planned with my reunion and working on things for the holidays for all of our businesses. I hope you have a great weekend too!
No joke I put Jude down for his nap to write this post and edit the photos. He was quiet and asleep. All of a sudden I hear screaming and look on his monitor and he’s standing in his crib. So I RUN to his room (which is literally less than 10 feet from my studio) and this is what’s happening. We are DEFINITELY lowering the crib tonight! :)
Hey! I know it is late on Monday night, but I figured you all were dying to know what we did this weekend! Oh you weren’t? Oh well here we are anyways… :)
We ran a couple errands on Friday night and then had dinner at our favorite little Mexican restaurant in Fairview Heights, the Chuck Wagon. Seriously, it’s our favorite place to eat!
Saturday we woke up bright and early (thank you Jude) and finished some things around the house and BTR ran a few errands for my dad’s businesses. Then my mom came over to watch Jude and BTR and I ran to Restaurant Depot in STL for my dad. Never heard of RD? It’s like a Sam’s Club, but on steroids, and only for restaurants. For example, instead of buying a 5 pound bag of flour, you buy a 50 pound bag of flour, etc. I was so excited when we got back to deliver our goods and I found the old sign in the back of the building! We just got a new video board sign so the old one is just hanging out against the wall. I never realized how huge it was! I’m trying to convince BTR we need it for our future bar in our basement. :)
Saturday night it started to snow so we made dinner at home and watched some movies and opened a yummy new beer! We had to miss Abraxas Day at Perennial, but we were so excited to get a bottle of it to enjoy at home.
We woke up bright and early on Sunday to attend mass and we were greeters for the first time. Everyone loved saying hi to Jude when they walked in.
After mass, BTR and I headed to STL for the Rams game with our besties Sean and Cassie! We had lunch at Morgan Street Brewery and then went to the game. Sean and Cassie have amazing tickets, and it was a great game seeing the Rams win! Oh and it was pretty fun to see Peyton Manning play also. They have all these food booths with local STL eateries, and I was excited to see Strange Donuts! I got a campfire done and it was delicious! #staystrange
We got home from the game and my mom had surprised us and made dinner for us while she watched Jude! I was pretty impressed she got him to nap for 2 hours, because he does not do that for me.
And I can’t leave out our pups this weekend! I finally got Jude’s PB anywhere chair out of his closet and into our living room since he likes climbing on it. Well Ellie thinks its for her and she climbs in it all the time. And Addie LOVES the snow. She goes absolutely crazy the second it starts flurrying and just throws herself into the snow, it’s so adorable.
Wow, looking back it seems like we had a crazy busy weekend, but lots of fun too! Did the snow keep you inside or did you get out and play?
After last week, this week was so nice to just be home and not worry about anything. Jude is doing great and has completely recovered. We did a lot of relaxing and playing this week, which was completely welcome after the stress of last week.
I feel like Jude just started crawling, so when he started to pull up and and STAND this week, I almost had a heart attack. Where did my baby go? I am not ready for this at all.
I had a birthday treat from my Starbucks rewards and finally got to use it this week! And I was pretty excited to get my first red cup of the season!
My friend Sara posted about how they got rid of their coffee table and now have a train table in its place. Well I have a feeling we aren’t too far away from the same thing. When Jude started crawling he kept running into our coffee table and banging his head so we finally packed it up and moved it to the basement this week. So now we have this HUGE open space in our family room for him to play.
Of course now with all the room all I can think of is this scene from the movie Step Brothers.
I don’t really have anything else fun for you. We plan on working most of Saturday (yay self-employment) and then going to church Sunday morning. We do have plans to go to the Rams game with our besties Sean and Cassie Sunday afternoon!
How was your week? Hope you have a fun weekend planned!
So I obviously didn’t get my act together for a Friday Favorites post this week, so you get a Saturday update!
I had a wonderful birthday on Monday! We celebrated on Saturday at dinner since BTR had to work till 8 that night (parent-teacher conferences). BTR actually didn’t have to go into work until noon that on Monday so we went out for breakfast. Did you know that you get a free grand slam at Denny’s on your birthday? :)
Ellie likes to hide treats when we give them to her. She’s not very clever and usually just hides them on the floor in our room. Then Addie finds them and eats them and she gets upset. Well she found a new hiding place, in Jude’s room! I found her like this on the chair the other day.
We were going into the grocery store the other day and when we reached the door I looked in Jude’s carseat and realized Sophie was gone. We then heard a dying squeak and realized she was in the crosswalk and a car had just hit her. I was able to wash her off, but her squeak just isn’t the same. Jude was not pleased. #momfail
Jude had an outpatient surgery this week. He had to go under general anesthesia and it was the longest hour of my life. He’s pretty cute in a hospital gown though!
He was groggy when I finally got to see him, but he was super cuddly. He’s recovering great and everything should be back to normal by Monday!
BTR has been working on trying to find a bourbon or wine barrel for a few months now. He finally was able to get one from a local craft brewery this week! He is going to make bottle openers out of the staves to sell in his etsy shop! They would be a great stocking stuffers for Christmas! (shameless plug)
We are laying low this weekend with lots of movies and baby snuggles. Hope you have a good weekend too!
